The feast of Saints Peter and Paul or solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul is a liturgical feast celebrated on June 29th in honor of the martyrdom of saints Peter and Paul. The celebration is the anniversary either of their death or of the translation of their relics.
This feast date very back further than the arrival of the Knights of St John in 1530. This feast marks an important event in the calendar of Maltese popular customs and traditions. It is a religious holiday and country harvest and folk festival.
This feast is named also L’IMNARJA, this word come from the Latin word Luminare - to light up, due to the bonfires that used to light up the festivities in the towns of Mdina and Rabat.
The Feast of St Peter & St Paul in Nadur
It is the most spectacular feast celebrated in Gozo. Thousands of people gather in the main streets of Nadur for celebrate the feast of St Peter and St Paul.
In Nadur the official celebrations start a week before the actual feast day. The streets of Nadur start to undergo a big transformation. The festa decorations in Nadur attract a lot of enthusiasts from all over Malta. Nadur is one of the most localities in Malta with a long tradition of immigration, for the celebration of this feast; you can notice foreign flags flying on top of houses. The Canadian, Australian, US and British flags clearly showing the ties with Western countries and show signs of returning immigrants
This celebration is also a public holiday in Rome (because St. Paul and St. Peter are Patron Saints of the eternal city), in Switzerland (only in the Canton of Ticino, the Canton of Lucerne and Graubünden) Peru, Colombia, Venezuela and in Chile.
