Popeye Village, also known as Sweethaven Village, is a group of wooden maisonettes located at Anchor Bay in the North West of Malta, just a few km away from Mellieha. It has been originally built to serve as a set of the shooting of the musical Popeye. Popeye came out in 1980 with Robin Williams as the main character.
The construction of the village started in June 1979. A construction crew of 165 had been working for seven months to the construction of the nineteen wooden buildings which are part of the village. Hundreds of logs and thousands of planks were imported from the Netherlands, whereas the roofs come from Canada. Eight tons of nails and 7,500 liters of paint were necessary. What's more, a 60 meters breakwater has been built around the mouth of Anchor Bay to protect the set from the times during the shooting.
In addition to the film set itself, Popeye Village offers others entertainments such as shows, attractions and museums. The mains characters of the film as Popeye, Olive, Brutus and Gontran are also presents and take part in shows. Some houses of the village are equipped with items linked to the film or accessories used during the shooting. Boat rides around Anchor Bay are organized when weather conditions allow it.
Anchor Bay is also a place renowned for diving. The main interest of this site is in a submarine cave whose ceiling is open. Outside the cave, the bay is composed of a sandy bottom and important rocky formations which bound small canyons where you can find an important marine life.
